English glassmaker George Ravenscroft (1618-1681) was
commissioned to find a substitute for the famous Venetial glass produced
on the island of Murano, using pure quartz sand and potash. His
discovered that by replacing much of the potash with lead oxide, he was
able to produce a glass with very high refractive index, and therefore
brilliance, that was also exceptionally well-suited to cutting and
engraving. Ravenscroft received a patent for his new glass in 1674.
